Ready Before the Bell: Wetwall at
Lyman C. Hunt Middle School

Originally built in 1959, Lyman C. Hunt Middle School in Burlington, Vermont, needed to support student life by renovating aging locker rooms and restrooms. With only a short summer construction window available, the district wanted a surface that could be installed quickly while providing long-term durability, simplified maintenance, and an updated appearance. Wetwall Waterproof Wall Panels were the fast, simple, modern solution for the job.

Like many K–12 schools across the country, Burlington School District faced several common renovation challenges. The project needed to conclude before the start of the school year, reduce long-term maintenance, and fit within budget. Traditional tile installation would have required additional demolition and a longer installation schedule — which simply wasn’t possible during the school's nine-week summer break.

Working with Colin P. Lindberg Architects and Neagly & Chase Construction Company, the school district selected Wetwall Waterproof Wall Panels in Tahiti Sands, a limestone-inspired design that blends warm and cool neutral tones. Rather than removing existing wall surfaces, Wetwall panels were installed over existing tile in many areas, significantly reducing demolition and keeping the project on schedule.

“We were looking for something that would help streamline the schedules, something that was durable.”

– RANDY BURNETT, ARCHITECT, COLIN P. LINDBERG ARCHITECTS

Because Wetwall does not require specialized installation, the general contractor was able to use standard woodworking tools, simplifying scheduling during a compressed construction timeline. Installing directly over existing substrates further accelerated construction while reducing labor and demolition. Burnett says, “The general contractor could install Wetwall. That's one less trade to coordinate during a tight summer schedule.”

Large-format waterproof panels minimized seams while AEON™ Technology delivered scratch- and scuff-resistant performance. Built-in antimicrobial protection also helps reduce ongoing maintenance by inhibiting stain- and odor-causing bacteria, mold, and mildew in busy athletic facilities.

“Wetwall didn't require anything beyond the tools we already use, and installing over existing walls greatly accelerated the project.”

– GARY CAHILL, PROJECT MANAGER, NEAGLY &
CHASE CONSTRUCTION

The renovated locker rooms now provide students and staff with modern, durable spaces designed for years of daily use. The off-white, limestone-inspired look of Tahiti Sands brings an organic warmth to the athletic facilities and completes the contemporary, fresh palette. The district also benefits from a waterproof wall system that is easier to clean and maintain than traditional tile installations.

For Burlington School District, the project demonstrates how renovation schedules can be accelerated without sacrificing long-term performance.

Dean Williams, Senior Facilities Technician for the school district, notes, “The waterproof wall system looks great, and it's much easier for our custodial staff to clean and maintain.”

Wetwall is engineered for K–12 schools, athletic facilities, locker rooms, restrooms, and any moisture-prone space that is expected to withstand constant wear with easy maintenance. It’s the complete waterproof solution for schools that need to renovate faster, reduce demolition, simplify installation, and deliver long-term performance.
